Faces on the Wall

Published on April 26, 2012 by in Umang 2012

After furious debate on the design, painstaking effort, and tons of laughter…

*Drum Roll*

The Core Chart of Umang 2012 is now complete.

Yesha and Shikha, the Creatives and Fine Arts HoDs, were in charge of preventing us from destroying the chart. Believe us, it was not an easy task.

At one point, Rishabh, our Technicals HoD (who – as we found out – has an unhappy relationship with paint), fell on a yellow paint can. At another, Akshat and Arnavaz fell right off the paints table with a mighty crash! The iNFORMALS! and MCA heads shared a rare moment of stunned silence.

Kruti, ever true to her post of Chairperson, directed all the action effortlessly. Yashmeet, our normally easy going Gaming HoD, was completely frustrated with Sahil Joshi’s befuddlement with drawing the lines. Computers and Workshops bonded (literally!) as Chintan’s face was stuck onto Wasim’s body.

Sansha, the L.A HoD, made VCP 1, Harini, take 20 pictures of hers and then proclaimed that she didn’t like any of them! Sohil and Harsh Patel’s iPhones were in demand every time someone wanted a picture and our P.R and PROshows heads, respectively, were only too happy to oblige. Vishal gave us sage advice from the corner as he sat engrossed in his laptop focused on bringing in lots of money to Umang through his Marketing.

Janani discovered her inner tattoo artist as she painted one on Akshat. Henna, Cafeteria HoD, mercilessly left us to starve as she sincerely painted across from Sahil Joshi who – taking a greater interest than Niket Shah – took 3 hours to paint ‘Printing and Stationery’! The Dance and Dramatics HoD then spent the next few days parading his ‘art’ all across the room.

While Harini bounced around the chart as if it were a trampoline, Zeeshaan, VCP 4 tiptoed around it, afraid to give Yesha a reason to let out one of her famous ear-piercing shrieks. Dhvaneel, our VCP 3, grimaced every time Shikha asked him to buy another bottle of paint. He foraged for little scraps of left over paper before he sanctioned a new chart paper!

Studying at home for IPCC, Harsh Doshi and Sahil Dewan, VCP 2 maintained a virtual presence with us, asking for pictures of the core chart on Watsapp and BBM, every 10 minutes. Ruchit and Riddhi were on the top of our minds as we tried to fit ‘Management∞Fest’ and ‘Riddhi Jasani’ into one line.

When it came to putting the chart up on the wall, everyone wanted to help!

What followed was a cacophony of shouted orders, startled shrieks, and one pained yelp as Hishit, the mighty Security HoD, managed to hit himself with a hammer!

Finally, after innumerable attempts, ever-so-whacked up ideas, and last minute brainstorming, the chart was up. There was a moment of complete silence as the Core of 2012 took a moment to look at their faces up on THE wall.

Here we are, Core 2012. Vibrant as the colours on the chart. Solid as the wall we’re on. United as those pictures on that black chart paper.

12 hours, 47.5 kms and 20 exhilarated faces later…

To keep up with the buzz of the heads selections, we’re here to share with you a little about our journey while selecting the heads.

From Borivali to Sion we’d taken a good hour to chalk out our route map which we tore up halfway.

A special thank you to all the bhaji walas, sweepers, and paan walas who helped us find the weird directions, peculiar addresses and god forsaken locations. Oh! And ,of course, our best guide Google maps.

It was dramatic, it was mundane. It was loud, it was quite. It was poised and sophisticated, it was also a complete chaos!

Our heads were quite a handful…

While some woke us up (we met Sansha Cornelio at 7.30 at her Borivali classes), we woke others (Sohil Bhansali was recovering from his exam hangover as we barged in).

We had families give better reactions than a few heads (Chintan Zaveri’s and Niket Shah’s mothers were an absolute delight! ).

We chased Harsh Patel down his tethering lane courtesy his headphones while Rishabh Acharya chased our car when we took off.

Akshat Shah’s neighbor spied on us as we banged the door of his empty house and he too had his share of encounters with the car when we almost rammed into him.

Arnavaz Ghista’s flop dance moves lived up to their reputation while we rescued Shikha Porwal who was locked in her own house!

Henna Shah was selected in true blue café style as she picked the Core cake.

Wasim Khan, Yashmeet Patil and Ruchit Desai couldn’t find any words let alone the right ones while Harsh Doshi ‘s loud squeal set the trend for many more.

Hishit Shah’s tall stance came undone while he sat down sinking in what had just happened. In all the drama and sheer excitement, we broke the glass of water on the table.

Janani Rajashekhar’s house had the best view but the house-help didn’t seem to want us there when he shut us out for a good 10 mins before she came to the door.

The most dramatic selection was Riddhi Jasani’s when we waited at the airport to see her off to the USA and told her she was leaving as a Head of Department of Umang ’12.

Yesha Shah stood at her door, calm and poised, when she heard us ascending the stairs. The calmness was hijacked by her squeals while her mom greeted us into her house in one discreet corner of Santacruz.

We were greeted by Vishal Kothari’s good old grandmother who didn’t understand why there was an army of black t-shirt guys at her doorstep asking for her grandson. We finally met him at McD minutes before the core meet.

We battled  Sahil Joshi’s disgruntled grandmother before meeting him at Parle station to tell him he was the final head selected.

There it was. The 20 pieces had fit right in.

The long day, longer road trip, the countless experiences had drained any ounce of energy we had in us. All of it came rushing back when we sat in the Umang Headquarters at 6.30 pm for our first meet as CORE, Umang 12.

It was the trailer of the next 5 months would pan out and trust us when we tell you, if this was the trailer, bahut badi picture baaki hai mere dost!

Yours truly,

TOP 5,

Umang ’12

“We must indeed all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

It is that reason that brings together the Core of Umang 2012.
